8 Strands Nylon Rope

8 Strand Nylon Ropes, also known as plaited ropes, are composed of eight strands grouped into four pairs. Because of its construction, 8 strand braided rope takes up far less space than similar 3 strand ropes, resulting in a product with a firm strand formation and full stowage flexibility.

This high strength resilient 8 Strand Nylon Rope has the ability to absorb sudden shock as well as excellent flex and superb resistance to abrasion, chemicals and marine organisms. 8 Strand Nylon Rope is unaffected by mildew and rot and can be stored when wet. It has a wide range of uses include marine dock lines and anchor lines, shipping and industrial work, vehicle tow rope, tie-downs, farm and livestock usage. This 8 Strand Nylon Rope is easy to splice and is very common for general purpose use. Nylon, also known as Polyamide, is the first synthetic fiber. This material is slightly stronger than Polyester but will be weakened by up to 10% when it gets wet. Nylon has good UV and abrasion resistance. The primary advantage of nylon over other materials is its 30% stretch to break, this makes nylon ideal in applications where energy absorption is a requirement. Nylon has a relative density of 1.14 and a melting point of 220 deg C.

Nylon rope has three characteristics that make it ideal for dockline. Nylon rope is incredibly strong, it is very stretchy, and it resists the harmful effects of sunlight better than any of those fancy-name synthetics.

Nylon ropes value of strength is self-evident, but the benefits of elasticity may not be as obvious. When your boat surges against an unyielding dockline, the load on the line goes from zero to the maximum at the instant the nylon line comes taut. The likely consequence is a broken line-not unlike how you might snap a piece of thread with a jerk. Even if the nylon rope is strong enough not to break, it is hammering cleats and bitts with every surge. Nylon rope doesn’t come taut suddenly, but dissipates the load by stretching. It is like the difference between hitting the steering wheel or hitting the air bag.

As for nylon rope’s resistance to ultraviolet damage, docklines, particularly permanent docklines, live in the sun. Nylon lines enjoy a much longer life than other lines in that environment.
